I think in addition to protesting the foresting of Zuck & Scott Park's we also need to address the security situation. About two weeks ago I was at Scott park with my children. We were walking along a path and we came along two men. Guess what these two men were doing!? They started to run away and got into two different vehicles and sped off - nearly hitting an elderly gentleman. I was going to report the incident to Millcreek Police but I didn't get the license plate of the vehicles.
I think instead of tearing down trees Millcreek township needs to REALLY, REALLY, REALLY crack down on this type of immoral, deviant behavior. In the middle of the afternoon! In broad daylight!
I tried to contact the local media (WSEE) but was told that it isn't a big deal. Other friends of mine have told similar stories about what they and their families have witnessed. Enough is enough!!! Time to get involved.
The Erie County Environmental Coalition does not in any way support or condone bigotry or hatred. We are however very much in support of free speech and therefore can not deny h.tilly the right to post her comments on our blog.
I do appreciate the support for protesting the timbering of the park. It is however my understanding that fear of sexual activity in the park was the cause for the destructive clearing of undergrowth (and compression of soils and root systems) along the road going into Scott Park. It is my belief that this bulldozing of the park ultimately led to the timbering plans that we are now faced with. During the clearing work a man working for the township was hit with a tree that he was felling and was hospitalized.
On a personal note I have been a frequent visitor to Scott Park for
over twenty years and I have never seen anything like the scene described by h.tilly. I walk there with my son often and have never
felt uncomfortable. I would highly recommend that people enjoy the
parks and not allow homophobia to prevent people from appreciating nature.
I read about Erie County Environmental Coalition in the paper today and would like more information. I wasn't able to find a website, but found this blog.
I am an Erie native now living in Colorado. I work for a nonprofit conservation group called Center for Native Ecosystems (www.nativeecosystems.org) that focuses on endangered species conservation in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. I come back to Erie to visit family and am interested in keeping in touch with Erie's conservation issues. The peninsula and Asbury Woods helped make me who I am today.
I think my sister and Lucas were in the same class in grade school (OLC?). Anyway, please keep up the good fight, and please contact me at erin@nativeecosystems.org with more information about the coalition.
